There is a moment, after you've lit the sage and watched the first curl of smoke rise, when the energy in a room begins to shift. The air feels lighter. Your breath slows. Something ancient and intentional takes over. This is the power of smudging — one of the oldest and most universally practised rituals for clearing energy, protecting space, and restoring spiritual clarity.
Whether you're new to smudging or returning to deepen your practice, this guide walks you through everything you need to know — from the tools and their meanings to a step-by-step house clearing ritual.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is the practice of burning sacred herbs or wood to purify a person, space, or object. Rooted in Indigenous traditions across North America, South America, and beyond, smudging has been used for centuries to clear negative energy, invite protection, and create sacred space for prayer, healing, and ceremony.
Today, smudging is embraced by people around the world as a powerful energetic hygiene practice — a way to reset the energy of your home, your aura, and your crystals.
The Four Elements and Your Smudge Tools
A traditional smudging ritual honours the four elements, and each tool in your smudge pack represents one:
- Earth — the sacred herbs and wood (white sage, palo santo)
- Fire — the flame that ignites the smudge
- Air — the smoke that carries your intention
- Water — the abalone shell that holds the sacred ash
Together, they create a complete and balanced ritual.
Your Smudging Tools Explained
White Sage (Salvia apiana)
White Sage is the most widely used smudging herb in the world. Its smoke is deeply purifying — clearing stagnant, heavy, and negative energies from spaces, objects, and the aura. It resonates with the Third Eye and Crown Chakras, supporting clarity, intuition, and spiritual connection. Use white sage when you need a deep, thorough energetic reset.
Palo Santo
Palo Santo, or “Holy Wood,” is a sacred tree native to South America. Its sweet, warm fragrance — with notes of pine, mint, and citrus — elevates the spirit, eases anxiety, and deepens meditation. Where white sage clears, palo santo invites — drawing in positive energy, creativity, and spiritual connection after a space has been cleared.
Selenite Wand
Selenite is known as “liquid light” — a high-vibrational crystal that purifies, aligns, and amplifies. Use your selenite wand to cleanse your aura before or after smudging, to recharge your other crystals, or to hold during meditation for clarity and calm. Unlike most crystals, selenite never needs cleansing itself.
Abalone Shell
The abalone shell is a gift from the sea, representing the water element and holding the sacred ash during your ritual. Its iridescent interior is deeply connected to the Heart and Throat Chakras — supporting emotional calm, compassion, and authentic expression. Always place your shell on a heat-resistant surface, as it can become warm during use.
Step-by-Step: How to Smudge Your Home
- Set your intention. Before you begin, take a moment to ground yourself. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and speak this opening intention aloud or hold it in your heart: “I set the intention for this ritual with love and clarity. I ask that all stagnant, heavy, and negative energy be released from this space. I invite in peace, protection, light, and love. May this ritual serve the highest good of all who dwell here. And so it is.”
- Open your windows and doors. This allows the smoke — and the energy it carries — to move freely out of your space.
- Light your sage. Hold the white sage bundle at a 45-degree angle and light the tip. Allow it to flame for 10–20 seconds, then gently blow out the flame so it begins to smoulder.
- Begin at your front door. Move through your home in a clockwise direction to invite positive energy, or counterclockwise to release and clear. Guide the smoke into corners, doorways, wardrobes, and beneath furniture — anywhere energy can accumulate.
- Speak your intention as you move. As you walk through each room, let your words carry the energy of the ritual. You might say: “I release all that no longer serves this space. I clear away stagnant energy, heaviness, and all that dims the light here. Only love, peace, and clarity remain.”
- Follow with palo santo. Once you have cleared with sage, light your palo santo stick and move through the space again — this time inviting warmth, positivity, and spiritual connection into the freshly cleared energy.
- Close with gratitude. Return to your front door and speak this closing prayer aloud or hold it quietly in your heart: “I give thanks to this space for sheltering and supporting me. I give thanks to the sacred tools that have served this ritual. May this home be filled with love, light, and protection. May all who enter feel peace. And so it is.”
- Extinguish safely. Press the smouldering tip firmly into your abalone shell or a heat-resistant dish until fully extinguished. Never leave burning smudge tools unattended.
How to Smudge Yourself
You can also smudge your own aura to clear heavy or stagnant energy from your energetic field. Light your sage or palo santo and, using your hand or a feather, guide the smoke from your feet upward to the crown of your head — front and back. As you do, speak this intention: “I release all energy that is not mine to carry. I cleanse my body, my mind, and my spirit. I am clear, I am light, I am protected. Only love remains.”
Follow with your selenite wand — sweep it slowly from head to toe, a few centimetres from your body, to further cleanse and align your aura.
How to Cleanse Your Crystals
Pass your crystals through the smoke of white sage or palo santo to clear any accumulated energies. As you do, speak this intention: “I cleanse and release all energies that no longer serve these crystals. I restore them to their highest vibration, filled with light, love, and pure intention. May they continue to serve with clarity and grace.”
You can also lay your crystals on or beside your selenite wand overnight — selenite naturally purifies and recharges other crystals without the need for sunlight or water.
White Sage vs Palo Santo — When to Use Each
- White Sage — use for deep clearing, after conflict or illness, when moving into a new space, or whenever the energy feels heavy or stagnant
- Palo Santo — use to invite positive energy after clearing, before meditation or creative work, or whenever you want to uplift and sweeten the energy of a space
- Both together — the most complete and powerful combination for a full energetic reset
Smudging Safety Tips
- Always burn smudge tools in a well-ventilated area
- Never leave burning sage or palo santo unattended
- Keep away from children, pets, and flammable materials
- Use your abalone shell on a heat-resistant surface
- If pregnant or nursing, consult a healthcare provider before use
- Palo santo often self-extinguishes — this is normal; simply relight as needed
