Smudging is one of the oldest and most powerful spiritual practices for clearing negative energy, purifying your space, and inviting peace, protection, and positive vibrations into your home. Rooted in Indigenous traditions across the Americas, smudging uses the smoke of sacred herbs — most commonly White Sage and Palo Santo — to cleanse people, places, and objects of stagnant or unwanted energy.
Whether you're moving into a new home, resetting after a difficult period, or simply maintaining the energetic hygiene of your sanctuary, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is the practice of burning sacred herbs and using the smoke to cleanse and purify energy. It is a ceremonial practice with deep roots in Indigenous cultures, including Native American, Mesoamerican, and South American traditions. Today, smudging is widely used in spiritual, wellness, and mindfulness practices around the world as a powerful tool for energetic cleansing and intention setting.
White Sage vs. Palo Santo — What's the Difference?
White Sage (Salvia apiana) is a sacred herb native to California and the American Southwest. Its smoke is deeply purifying, clearing negative, stagnant, and heavy energy from spaces, objects, and the aura. White Sage is ideal for a thorough energetic reset — particularly after illness, conflict, or moving into a new space.
Palo Santo (meaning "Holy Wood" in Spanish) is a sacred tree native to South America. Unlike White Sage, which clears and removes energy, Palo Santo invites — drawing in blessings, peace, creativity, and spiritual protection. Its warm, sweet, resinous scent is deeply calming and uplifting. Use Palo Santo after smudging with White Sage to fill the cleared space with positive energy.
What You'll Need
- White Sage bundle — for clearing and purifying
- Palo Santo stick — for inviting blessings and protection
- Abalone Shell — a heatproof holder representing the Water element
- Feather — for directing smoke with intention (Air element)
- Charcoal disc — to help ignite your herbs
- Matches or a lighter
- An open window or door — to allow negative energy to exit
How to Smudge Your Home — Step by Step
1. Set Your Intention
Before you begin, take a moment to ground yourself and set a clear intention. What are you clearing? What are you inviting in? You might say aloud or silently: "I release all negative, stagnant, and unwanted energy from this space. I invite in peace, love, and positive energy."
2. Open Your Windows and Doors
Open at least one window or door in each room you plan to smudge. This gives the negative energy a pathway to leave your space.
3. Light Your White Sage
Hold your White Sage bundle over your Abalone Shell and light the tip. Allow it to catch flame, then gently blow it out so it smoulders and produces smoke. If it goes out, simply relight it.
4. Smudge Your Space
Starting at the front door and moving clockwise through your home, use your feather (or your hand) to waft the smoke into every corner, along walls, around doorways, and into cupboards. Pay special attention to corners, where stagnant energy tends to collect. As you move through each room, repeat your intention or a simple prayer.
5. Smudge Yourself
To cleanse your own aura, waft the smoke from your feet upward to the top of your head, moving it around your body. Set the intention to release any energy that is not yours or that no longer serves you.
6. Extinguish Safely
Press the burning end of your sage bundle firmly into your Abalone Shell or a heatproof dish to extinguish it. Never leave a burning smudge stick unattended.
7. Follow with Palo Santo
Once you have cleared your space with White Sage, light your Palo Santo stick and move through your home again, this time with the intention of inviting in blessings, warmth, and positive energy. Palo Santo's sweet, woody smoke will fill your space with a beautiful, uplifting frequency.
