WHITE SAGE
For hundreds of years, white sage (salvia apiana) has been considered a sacred, cleansing, purifying, and protective plant. Used in rituals and ceremonies for centuries, white sage is often burned in a ritual known as smudging. Smudging is a cleansing ceremony used to rid a person, space, or object of negative energy or even bad spirits.

Sage emits negative ions, and our aura holds positive ions. Through the smudging process, we can neutralize our aura, or the energy of other spaces and objects, to cleanse and renew.

PALO SANTO
Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens) has a long history of use by the native people of South America as an essential tool in sacred shamanic rituals for its energetic cleansing and medicinal healing properties.

The mystical tree is part of the citrus family and has sweet notes of pine, mint, and lemon. The calming and relaxing aroma of Palo Santo is even more present in the smoke of the smoldering wood. Today, it continues to be enjoyed for its cleansing and healing properties, much like sage, to release negative energies and negative thoughts and feelings. The smoke provides an uplifting scent that calms the mind, raises your vibration in preparation for meditation, and provides a deeper spiritual connection.

Representing the 'water' element of a 4-element ritual, the abalone shell is also used to catch the ash and embers from your smudge stick.

Rest your smudge stick on the shell before, during, and after your cleansing ritual.

How do you smudge a house?

1. Before you start, make sure all windows and doors are open so the smoke can go out, as you want the negative energy to be released back to Mother Earth.
2. Start at the front door of the home and light your smudge stick.
3. When lighting the smudge stick light, light the tip of the leaves, allowing it to burn for 5–10 seconds, and gently blow on the leaves to create smoke. 
   
4. Hold in a heatproof container, smudge pot, or shell so the ashes do not go all over the floor or furniture.
5. Slowly move among your rooms, gently waving the stick in the air. Fan smoke with your hand, smudge fan, or smudge feather.
6. Move mindfully when you are going from room to room with care, walking clockwise around the entire perimeter of the home. Be sure to allow the smoke to drift into even the most hidden spaces, like inside closets, basements, and dark corners. 
7. If you are cleansing a room, move in a counterclockwise direction to banish negativity and clockwise for invoking.
   
8. After use, gently extinguish the smoke in the sand or a small dish of water.
9. Store it in a dry place for future use.

What do you say when you cleanse your house with sage?

Use this example prayer; you could simply say:

'Sacred and holy ones, please clear this place of stagnant and negative energy.'

Then you may say, after you are finished smudging, 

'You can thank them and the sage for their help.'

Can you reuse a smudge stick?

You may reuse a smudge stick, but put it out under running water. You may put the sage in the sun to dry out before you reuse it again, but if you crush it out, it will continue to smolder and be a fire hazard.
